A hydraulic cylinder piston rod, often referred to as the "rod" or "stem," is a critical precision component that acts as the muscle in a hydraulic cylinder. The core of the piston rod is typically manufactured from high-strength, low-carbon steel alloys such as AISI 1045 or 4140. This material choice provides the necessary tensile strength to handle heavy loads without stretching or fracturing and the rigidity to resist bending under extreme pressure. However, the raw steel alone is not sufficient to withstand the harsh operating environment inside a cylinder.
Therefore, the piston rod undergoes a specialized surface treatment process. The most common and effective treatment is Hard Chromium Plating. A substantial layer of chromium is electroplated onto the meticulously polished steel substrate. This coating is exceptionally hard (typically 68-72 HRC) and provides three vital benefits:

The end of the rod is usually threaded to securely attach to the piston inside the cylinder and to the machine's load outside. Given its role, the piston rod must be perfectly straight, perfectly round, and manufactured to extremely tight tolerances. Any imperfection can lead to premature seal failure, fluid leakage, and a catastrophic breakdown of the entire hydraulic system.
