Analysis Of The Honed Tube Production Process

Aug 09, 2025

Honed tubes, as high-precision tubing, are widely used in hydraulic systems, automotive manufacturing, and precision machinery. The rigor of their production processes directly impacts the final product performance. This article will detail the complete production process for honed tubes, from raw materials to finished product.
Honed tube production begins with the selection of high-quality seamless or welded steel pipes. These raw materials undergo rigorous quality testing to ensure their chemical composition and mechanical properties meet standards. The tubes then undergo pretreatment, including straightening and surface cleaning to eliminate any bends and oxide layers from the initial machining process, laying the foundation for subsequent processing steps.
Next comes rough machining, typically using boring or turning to initially machine the tube's internal bore to near-target dimensions, while retaining a certain machining allowance. This stage focuses on ensuring the basic shape and dimensional tolerances of the internal bore, providing a good reference surface for honing.
Honing is the core process, where a high-precision honing machine precisely grinds the tube's internal bore. The honing head, composed of multiple sets of oilstones, rotates and reciprocates, applying a constant pressure to the inner bore surface, gradually removing trace amounts of material and creating a uniform, cross-linked pattern. This process not only improves the dimensional accuracy of the inner bore (reaching IT6 or higher), but also significantly improves surface roughness (Ra ≤ 0.4μm), enhancing the wear resistance and sealing properties of the pipe.

Finally, honed tubes undergo a rigorous final inspection, including dimensional measurement, surface quality assessment, and pressure testing, to ensure that each product meets technical requirements. Qualified products undergo rust-proofing treatment, are packaged, and stored for delivery.

In summary, the production process for honed tubes integrates materials science, machining, and precision testing technologies. Process optimization and control are crucial to ensuring product quality.
