These components serve as the critical pressure-containing barrel in hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders where surface integrity and dimensional accuracy directly impact system efficiency and service life.
Manufactured from various steel grades including E355/ST52, C20, CK45, and alloy steels, honing pipes comply with international standards such as DIN 2391, ASTM A519, and GB/T 3639. The chemical composition is meticulously controlled-for instance, E355 grade contains maximum 0.22% carbon, 0.55% silicon, and 1.6% manganese with restricted phosphorus and sulfur (≤0.025%)-to ensure excellent weldability, mechanical strength, and resistance to fatigue.

The production process involves cold drawing followed by stress-relieving heat treatment (BK+S condition), which enhances dimensional stability and mechanical properties. This results in tensile strengths ranging from 520-640 MPa and yield strengths between 375-520 MPa depending on material grade. The honing operation itself employs abrasive stones that remove microscopic surface imperfections while generating a characteristic cross-hatch surface pattern with controlled roughness between Ra 0.1-0.8 μm. This pattern facilitates optimal lubricant retention, reduces friction, and prevents fluid bypass during cylinder operation.
Advanced manufacturing variants include Skived and Roller Burnished (SRB) processing, which combines precision cutting with high-pressure roller finishing to achieve surface finishes as fine as Ra 0.1-0.4 μm. These pipes maintain strict dimensional tolerances with H8-H9 inner diameter classifications, outer diameters from 40-500 mm, wall thickness tolerances of ±5% to ±10%, and straightness within 0.5-1 mm per meter. Standard lengths extend to 12 meters, accommodating both single-piece and multi-stage cylinder designs.
These precision-engineered honing pipes find essential applications in hydraulic cylinders for construction machinery (excavators, bulldozers), industrial equipment (presses, injection molding machines), material handling systems (forklifts, cranes), and mobile hydraulic applications.
